So here it is, attempt #136

I've tried to quit smoking now more times than I can count. I tried the Patch very briefly and hated it. I've tried the gum and hated it more. I tried the lozenges and they basically made me throw up. Honestly, the only thing that has brought me closest to what can be called success was plain old cold turkey and willpower. Last time I quit was under those terms and it got me 4 months of smoke-free happiness. Then I went on vacation. Did you know that cigarettes are a dollar a pack in Cuba?!? Well they are. Gawd dammit.

This this time I'm trying something new. Every shrink everywhere always suggests keeping a diary of whatever addiction you're trying to kick, so in that spirit, here's my Quit Smoking blog. Any words of wisdom you have would be helpful, so please post your comments.

Here goes nothing...

  2. Everybody's different, but this method would never work for me. Writing about smoking, thinking about smoking, journalling about smoking, reading about smoking... if I do all that, then THERE'S GONNA BE SOME FUCKING SMOKING, that's all I have to say about this quitting method.

Thought precedes action. Cigarettes in your brain is what precedes cigarettes in your mouth. Without A, it is actually physically impossible for B to happen. That's the key to quitting. DO NOT THINK ABOUT THEM. No, really, don't. Just... don't. I make it sound easy but it is definitely not easy, but it is however, very very very very simple just don't think about them and you will not smoke them, and when you do think about them your number one goal should be to stop. That IS the formula. (I still haven't discovered the formula to never relapsing, like, ever. 87)

I definitely like that you have a personal blog, you absolutely should! 8)

  3. Thanks dude :) And yes I should have a personal blog for general...generalness.

I'm liking it. Looking back what what I'm writing, I'm realizing the futuility of smoking at all. At the time, it's "just one more", but keeping a tally quantifies the action in a way that is very negative to me. That, to me, is helpful. As you said, everyone is different.

Plus I'm one to fixate...if i want something I'll think of nothing else. It doesn;t mater what it is. I fixated on a replica lightsaber for about 4 months before I got one. Right now all my attention is focussed on a Logitech universal remote. I'm like that...I want it and I won't be able to purge the need until its fulfilled. This action might help curb that behavious in some small way. Call it a modicum of self-improvement along for the ride :)
